Our Programs
We believe that the family unit is a powerful bond that can help provide healing over trauma. It is through the love of a family and stability that allows a child to feel permanency and to grow an attachment.
It is through this attachment with their caregiver that we begin to see strides of overcoming trauma and forming healthy relationships.
Because of this we place an emphasis that the foundation of all our programs are family based as opposed to institutional based.
Our Crisis Care Center implements that philosophy of family based programs but for children that have short term cases, as child services (DINAF) can relocate them to a safe environment.
Even though it’s only short term we still place an emphasis on attachment as well providing the children with an opportunity to work with our on staff psychologist.
Typical crisis care cases we receive are related to abuse, neglect or immigration.
Under the umbrella of crisis care is our Transition House which is a home for children with special cases waiting on foster and adoptive families, or a permanent home to become available. Special cases can include, sibling groups, teenage mothers, severe malnourishment, special needs, newborns, and longer term placements.
Legacy of Hope is one of the only crisis care centers that are equipped with this type of home and currently the only resource in this region of the country providing transitional care. Our children will remain with us until there is no longer a need, or until a more permanent home is identified. That could be a few weeks, months, and possibly even a few years.
Our foster care model places us in the role of a foster care agency. While it is the role of DINAF (Honduran child services division) to place children in homes, we provide the resources to identify, educate and support these families.
Our personal residence serves as the first foster homes in Honduras’s new foster program. Under our umbrella we currently have 8 foster families.
Through our families we have seen the power of attachment and stability that has allowed for children to overcome their trauma.
Legacy of Hope Foundation believes family preservation is the first line of defense in combating the orphan crisis. After identification of a struggling family through community channels such as local churches, we are able to create a service plan for the family with specific goals.
In this way, we walk alongside a family helping to provide basic needs depending on their individual service plan.
It feels as if anywhere you look these days the topic of discussion is immigration.
Through placing an emphasis on the nulcear family it is our goal to break generational norms that lead to immigration.
We believe to combat underlying issues that Honduras faces such as crime, poverty and access to education can see lasting change by placing an emphasis on the nuclear family unit.
